Dorset Volunteers Befriending Scheme
Volunteers Befriending Scheme
The scheme is run by the YMCA Fairthorne Group. The befrienders are young volunteers between 16 and 25 who will work with young people who are disabled to help them experience a short break away from their family. They will provide regular contact and assist the young person to access facilities and experience and enjoy activities which might otherwise be difficult them to take part in or which they might enjoy more in the company of a befriender.
This can mean supporting a young person who is disabled on a 1:1 basis in a variety of situations. It could, be example, be accompanying them to a local coffee shop for cake and a chat, or visiting a local park, youth club or on a trip to the cinema.
The scheme was launched in mid-2010. All volunteers will be trained and supported and carefully matched with a young person who shares similar interests.
