This fantastic Newport Nursery and Preschool is located within the grounds of St Mary’s Hospital where the YMCA has been working in partnership with the NHS since January 2005 to provide the very best in care.
Children are provided with a wide range of learning experiences both within the nursery building and the extensive garden, enabling us to promote an emphasis on outdoor learning. The outside space includes a woodland area with a variety of trees that are home to wildlife, provide shade in the summer and are a visual example of seasonal change. Children have the opportunity to try gardening using wheelbarrows to move soil and other materials such as forks and spades for digging and planting. There is also a safe garden for the babies, including a summer house.
St. Mary’s Baby & Toddler Group
The nursery is also the perfect setting for its weekly Baby & Toddler Group, which offers parents / carers and children (0-2 years) some fantastic indoor and outdoor activities, such as Mini Musical Moments, messy play, stories and rhymes and sensory play, plus lots of fun in the lovely secure garden.

The Newport Nursery is registered for 86 children from 4 months – 5 years. We provide 3 light and airy rooms in a modern building:
Bumble Bee Room
The Bumble Bee Room caters for children aged 4 months – 2 years. We have two rooms with a range of resources and activities to provide the children with exciting experiences. In the Playroom the children have access to a variety of toys which are stored at their level, so they can access them freely. Our Messy Room provides lots of different textures to explore, and sometimes taste, as well as sand and water. We do lots of mark-making activities encouraging all of the children to enjoy getting messy! We also extend our activities by taking our Bumble Bees into our lovely safe garden, where the children can enjoy some fresh air and the space to run around. Please give us a call if your little Bumble Bee would like to come and join us.
The Ladybird Room caters for children aged 2 – 3 years. Ladybirds can enjoy a wide variety of activities from story books and construction to a home corner and painting, all covering the 6 main areas of learning. In our lovely garden there is the opportunity for climbing, balancing, or maybe some stories under the shade of the trees. Our aim is to help our Ladybirds explore and expand their experience to their fullest potential. Please come along, visit us, and meet some of our Ladybirds!
The Grasshopper Room caters for children aged 3 – 5 years. The Grasshoppers enjoy large indoor space which contains 6 main areas of learning, and a wide range of activities which are readily available each day. The Grasshoppers are also lucky to have a beautiful and spacious woodland garden, with some mature trees – perfect for bug hunting! We have a lovely summer house, and plenty of play equipment to keep even the most active and adventurous pre-schoolers happy! Our Grasshoppers have the opportunity to do some planting and growing in our large wooden planters, and also get the chance to safely explore a range of tools for use in woodwork. There are also culinary delights-a-plenty with cooking activities, and a range of art and craft activities on offer. We would love you to come along and see what we have to offer to 3 – 5 year olds.

Michael started at the YMCA at 6 months old; he is now nearly 5 and leaving for big school. Michael has enjoyed every aspect of the nursery- especially baking, woodwork, construction building and the garden.
Michael has made so many friends and is very fond of the staff (especially Joe). The staff are very friendly, helpful and nothing is too much. I knew from the moment I stepped into this nursery that this was the right one. I would definitely recommend this nursery to anyone.
Jacob started in the baby group where he settled easily with the help of the staff. Now he’s in the Grasshopper group he enjoys playing outside in the lovely garden. He also loves Boogie Mites. He will miss his friends – children and adults alike.
