Sleep Easy

Sleep rough so others don’t have to

Youth homelessness has many causes and takes many forms. In many cases it is hidden due to sofa-surfing or inadequate housing as well as rough sleeping. At YMCA Southampton we provide supported housing that is safe and secure and we work with young people to make every attempt to ensure that homelessness doesn’t happen again.

What is Sleep Easy?

Sleep Easy is our annual fundraising event where participants brave the cold and sleep in a cardboard box for one night to raise awareness and attract sponsorship for a worthwhile cause. Sleep Easy is not only a challenging and eye-opening experience, but an opportunity to have fun, make friends, and raise money to help eradicate youth homelessness. All funds raised from this event are split between the following areas:

  • 70% to YMCA Southampton Housing for young people.
  • 20% to  YMCA Fairthorne Group’s bursary scheme, providing support and access to our valuable YMCA services for local children, young people and families facing challenges in their lives.
  • 10% to international development through Y Care International.

Your funds will help provide:

  • £5 will pay for electricity for a tenant for a week
  • £10 will pay for a new shirt for a young person to wear to an interview
  • £50 will pay for a new mattress for a tenant’s bed
  • £100 will pay for the cost of travel to college for a month
  • £500 replaces the carpet in a tenant’s flat

Meet Amy…

Amy is one of the many young people we have supported through our dedicated housing programmes at YMCA Southampton. Here, you can read her story.

Amy was living with her mum, step-dad, and six other children. In 2014, one of Amy’s sisters became pregnant, and Amy was left to share a room with her – and the newborn baby. Due to the overcrowding, tensions ran high, and after an argument, Amy felt she had no choice but to leave home, and move in with her father. Despite the fact that Amy was still attending college – she found she could not sleep, as her father and his partner would often argue late into the night – keeping her awake. At college, she was tired, and unable to pay attention. Her father and his partner suggested Amy move out, as their home environment was having a negative effect on her.

Amy sent an application to the City Council, who placed in her emergency accommodation before she was moved to the YMCA. Since then, Amy has gone from strength to strength.

“The YMCA has done everything for me,” she says. “They put a roof over my head, supported me to live independently, helped me with my budgeting, and helped me to improve my life.”

We’re so pleased to announce that Amy is now employed by the YMCA, and is an asset to our team.

“I love my job!” she says.

Sleep Easy 2016

Sleep Easy 2016 was a huge success and we would like to thank everyone who participated, donated and supported our event. This was our third Sleep Easy and the coldest. Twelve hardy souls took up the cardboard challenge, creating temporary homes to set up a bed for the night, and thanks to generous sponsorship we raised £3,500. The coveted ‘Most Funds Raised Hot Water Bottle’ award went to our top perennial fundraiser Sharon Maby, who raised an impressive £845.06, and the ‘Bling My Box’ award went to Andy Hatton. Throughout the night, generous supplies of  pizza and hot soup ensured we retained necessary fuel levels and high spirits. Everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed the event and there were many optimistic promises to brave the elements again next year.
