YMCA Winchester House Nursery
YMCA Winchester House Nursery is located in the seaside town of Shanklin on the Isle of Wight. Our childcare centres deliver a high standard of child care for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years and is one of two Island nurseries, the other being St. Mary's Day Nursery located at St Mary's Hospital in Newport.
Our Nursery
Winchester House is a friendly 56-place day nursery, with plenty of indoor and outdoor space in which children can play. There are two large playrooms for different age groups with direct access to a large secure garden area. Our highly trained and experienced staff are matched by the range of equipment, resources and beauty of the natural surroundings.
Play based learning
The play based learning initiative works on the principle that fun and discovery in a carefully nurtured environment are the best ways to maximise and encourage learning and development for your child.
Our staff are dedicated to providing tailored individual care for every child, and recognise four core development areas as follows:

These expand to cover the following:
- Communication, language and literacy
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
- Knowledge and understanding of he World

Activities
All indoor and outdoor activities are aimed at developing a child's self esteem, confidence and social skills. Children are given access to the outdoors, learning based opportunities split into specific learning areas and additional activities, alongside free play.
Learning areas include:
- Small word play
- Music and sound
- Observing mini-beasts
- Language and literacy
- A construction area
- Water experimentation
Additional activities set up each day can include:
- Den building
- Dressing up
- Large scale art and craft activities
- Water and sand play
- Construction and imaginative play

Meals and Snacks:
Children are provided with healthy meals and snacks that meet their nutritional needs. The nursery is supported by our dedicated catering team who work closely to the guidelines of Caroline Walker Trust, the world leading childhood nutritional research organization.
Safety:
Safety in all of our nurseries is of paramount importance to us, with full safety procedures and precautions in place. Winchester House is OFSTED registered, like all YMCA nurseries.
Opening Hours:
Winchester House Nursery is open Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 6pm for 51 weeks of the year. The nursery is closed on Bank Holidays and between Christmas Day and New Years Day. Fees are not charged for these days.
